Asphalt Pavement - Design Basics

Architect Training Course
Asphalt pavement is used for many applications, including roadways, parking lots, bicycle paths and recreation facilities such as tennis courts and golf cart paths. This 2-hour online course covers some of the basic design considerations for proper structural design of pavements. The text of the course is taken from a guide prepared by the Maryland Asphalt Association.

There will be a multiple-choice quiz at the end of this course.

At the conclusion of the course, you will understand:

  • The basic criteria for determining the depth of asphalt pavement for local streets, parking lots, bicycle paths and tennis courts
  • The purpose of a tack coat
  • The importance of drainage for asphalt pavements
  • The impact that subgrade soils have on pavement depth requirements
  • The considerations involved in resurfacing existing pavements
